1 Corinthians 15:10
“But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favor on me and not without results. For I have worked harder than any of the other apostles; yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace.”
“Lather, Rinse, Repeat.”
If you’re like me, you probably haven’t thought much about the directions that are on just about every shampoo bottle ever made. The directions are pretty simple, right? Most of us go through these motions every day without ever thinking about it. Then when someone compliments you (especially you ladies), on how nice your hair looks, how fresh, bouncy and full of life it is, the answer that often follows is, “oh, I just washed it.”
It’s funny how, in life, we will often focus on the wrong thing. In the movie “A View From The Top”, Mike Myers famously says, “you put the wrong emPHAsis on the wrong syLABle.” Think about it. An essential part of the process of washing your hair is using actual shampoo. We can scrub our hair all day long, congratulating ourselves on how well we go through the motions – but it’s pretty ineffective until we add the shampoo. It’s the shampoo that makes the difference.
I don’t know the bathing routines of the Apostles, but I know Paul understood this principle. When he wrote his letter to the Corinthians, he was responding to the report that the church he had helped found was losing it’s perspective on theimportant things. Pride and jealousy were taking over. It was becoming a church of Me’sand I’s. “ I did it because I’m so good at this…” Sound familiar? They forgot that it was God working in them that made the difference.
They forgot about the shampoo.
Take a moment to think about your journey and thank God for all he has done through you. After all, without Him, we’re left with a wet, soggy mess.
