I Quit Devotion Day Nineteen

Psalm 37:23

“The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.”

I love looking at maps.

It makes me happy to look at places I’ve never been, and to see how to get from one location to another. I always check maps when I’m preparing for a trip; I like to be prepared.

Sometimes, I wish that there was a map for the path of my life, so I could know exactly where I’m going. Sometimes I feel lost, like I’ve gotten myself off track, and I just don’t know where to go next. In those moments, I wish that someone would tell me what step to take.

In this verse, the Psalmist says that God  is that map. He knows every step we should take to reach the good things that he has planned for us. If we belong to Him, God promises to direct our steps.

God shows us the path – but we have to choose to walk down it. It’s tempting to want to do things our own way. It’s hard to give up control, and some areas are even more difficult than others.

If we follow God’s path, though, God promises it will lead to good things – and, not just in a general, “looking-back-at-the-end-of-your-life” kind of way. The psalmist says that he takes pleasure in EVERY detail of our lives. I don’t even pay attention, let alone find delight, in every detail of my life…but God, who created the universe, takes pleasure in all those small things.

One of my life verses, Psalm 25:4-5, is a wonderful prayer for direction, and illustrates how God is present in all the details:

“Show me the right path, O Lord  [God is above/around me]; point out the road for me to follow  [God is beside me]. Lead me by your truth  [God is ahead of me] and teach me  [God turns to face me], for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.”- Psalm 25:4-5 (commentary is mine)

I encourage you to pray this prayer when you need direction, to lean on God, and let Him delight in leading every step of your life.
