"This is my command: Love each other."
As a young Christian, it was always encouraging to hear someone remark on my joyful spirit. It was a blessing from God, and my parents named me Olufunmilayo, which means, “God has given us joy” in the Yoruba language.
As the years went by, I continued to rely on this spirit (which at times was just a feeling), to motivate me to love people.
When God called me to love others when I was not feeling very joyful (perhaps I just didn’t connect with them or felt they struggled too much, talked too much, etc.) or I was too busy (timing is everything in New York), I STRUGGLED. It was clear my love for people had been built on a feeling rather than what God had commanded me to do.
But the good news is, God brought a woman into my growth group who showed her love for others by serving them, no matter what. I was challenged by her unconditional love. It wasn’t based on a feeling, because I knew at times she was not a “happy camper.” It was a blessing to witness her obedience, and I gained a best friend.
So how is your love for others going?
