I Quit Devotion Day Thirty Six

Matthew 16:18

"Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means 'rock'), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it."

Have you ever felt your world collapsing in front of you and feeling helpless about it? That being happy is impossible, and life is a series of unexpected problems?

Just a week ago, I received an unexpected call from the doctor’s office. They said they found a cyst in my breast, and I needed to go for a biopsy. As you can imagine, I was devastated to hear the news. Days leading up to my biopsy, I felt lost and kept thinking the worse.  OMG! I might have cancer. I could die.

I went in for my biopsy that morning, and I remember walking into the facility and keeping my head down. I can still feel the butterflies in my stomach as I took flight onto the second floor where the doctor was waiting for me. I was scared to death to face whatever was about to happen.

As I lay in the waiting room for the doctor to prepare for the procedure, I fought back the tears and bad thoughts in my head. “Stop it!” I told myself. “This isn’t me. I have to get myself together! I am a child of God and He will take care of me. I have to stay confident and optimistic.”

In that moment, I came to a realization that only God is in control of my life and I have to place my trust in Him. In Matthew 16:18, the Bible says, “Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means “rock”), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.”

When the storms of life come, as they surely will, my foundation must be set upon a sure place. Jesus is my Rock. He is the only solid foundation for life.

Like Peter, when we set our lives upon the rock, Jesus Christ, we will be cemented into place by the power of the Holy Spirit. No one and nothing in life can knock us down. When Jesus promised Peter that the “Gates of Hell” would not conquer against the Rock, He meant there is no power in hell or on earth that has the power to remove us from the hand of Almighty God; for we are built into the solid foundation of Jesus Christ.

I want to challenge you with one question today. What foundation do you build your trust upon?

As I face inevitable uncertainties in life and in my future, I’m learning that unshakable confidence is not built on someone, something or someplace but on our unshakable God. In difficult times, God has taught me He alone is my firm foundation for rebuilding confidence. I encourage you to build your confidence on God, who will never leave us or forsake us.
